Essay / Analysis of Leviathan by Thomas Hobbles - 978
In Leviathan, Thomas Hobbes argues that an ideal state is one in which the government has all the powers to protect the people and provide security. Thomas Hobbes believed that people were inherently evil. He claimed that people would do what they wanted to get what they wanted. He calls this a state of nature. He states that the natural state is the place we find ourselves in before we are actually influenced by society. He says this place is total chaos because people only do what benefits them. He describes the natural state of man as wild and chaotic without government. It affirms the idea that man naturally needs and wants order, but that it is best not to be able to do it in his own way. He goes on to point out that the world would only be chaotic if there were no absolute monarchs. Hobbes believes that man must establish Leviathan by entering into a social contract and only then will the world function in an ideal manner. He considers the state of nature to be the human body; the government being the head and the citizens the body. The head has absolute control, but the body can still harm itself and the head, but only if the head allows it. The people (the body) must give their consent to the government to exercise absolute power. I believe that Thomas Hobbes' vision of how society should be run is far too ambitious and sets the stage for tyranny and overwhelms the individual. The idea that the citizens are the body and the government is the leader is not unrealistic. In fact, the portal or body politics is brilliant but it fails to account for the individual. I believe there is no way for man to exist without government. I believe that even in our natural state we assert a certain type of government. I see that man can... middle of paper ... while they depend on each other. The world is a lot like a high school, even on a larger scale. In a secondary school you have the choice of being an engaged, involved participant who undertakes many activities where they are constantly working with others or you can be the lone bully. Liberals believe that the ideal choice is one that involves cooperation with others. This allows different people with different perspectives to come together and formulate ideas and decisions together. In a Hobbesian society or government this would not work because in a government where there is a single sovereign leader, decisions are ultimately made by him or under his strong leadership. If Hobbes believes that man is mean, selfish and evil in his natural state, he must also understand that some will be even more competent in certain areas than others, which will force men to depend on each other..
