Post-traumatic stress disorder is a condition in which the person emotionally relives certain periods of their past. It is primarily related to members of the military, and particularly those on active combat duty, due to the amount of traumatic experiences that can happen to them. Post-traumatic stress disorder can affect family members by hurting them if the survivor becomes emotionally disinterested in the family. The Red Convertible presents itself as a psychological perspective as Henry's post-traumatic stress disorder affects the relationship with his brother Lyman. The symptoms and feelings that present themselves in "The Red Cabriolet" are problems that many post-traumatic stress disorder families experience on a daily basis. In Erdrich's "The Red Convertible", a character named Henry defines it as "But he was calm, so calm and never at ease sitting anywhere but always standing and moving" (Erdrich). Erdrich describes Henry as suffering from the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder that many returning soldiers today exhibit. Most trauma survivors return to normal life for a while. On the other hand, some traumatized people may take time to disappear or their condition may worsen. Erdrich continues to describe the impact of post-traumatic stress disorder on Lyman's family from being alone. “I was feeling depressed about Henry at that time. We had always been together before. But he was so lonely now that I didn't know how to take him” (Erdrich). Since his brother became physically and emotionally separated from his family, Lyman began to feel alone, as if his brother had never returned to war. Many veterans suffer from this condition but do not need any medical treatment. The war on terror is creating new generations with post-traumatic stress disorder. Many veterans will return home without any assistance. In conclusion, all wars have caused post-traumatic stress disorder-related illnesses in veterans. In “The Red Cabriolet”, the author shows how the effect of post-traumatic stress syndrome can have on those around a person suffering from an illness like Henry. It is important to understand post-traumatic stress disorder. Post-traumatic stress disorder affects people who come from war. This disorder puts stress on their mind to cope. The fact remains that until all veterans who need help can get it, post-traumatic stress disorder will remain a persistent problem in America..
