For millennia, the human race has tried to understand the meaning of life and what awaits us next, through religion, science or conjecture. In the case of religion, the summarized version of Christian belief is that when you die, your soul goes to heaven. Therefore, for someone or something to go to heaven, it must possess a soul. To say that someone has a soul is to say that they have a deeply felt emotional nature, an individual cause of life, or a moral force. When we're little and a beloved pet dies, most parents say something like, "He's in a better place" or "He's in pet heaven." Being children, blessed with a powerful imagination and the ability to question everything, the cogs of our minds would start turning with questions. As adults, these questions still nag us because of the strong relationship we have with our pets. Philosophers, scientists, authors and many others have strived to find the truth about the immortality of animals and their possession of a soul, and their opinions, although sometimes confused, are important for the future understanding animals. Friederike Range, a German scientist with a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania, was featured in Virginia Morell's book, Animal Wise. Morell wrote about Range's belief in our longing to understand the connection between humans, dogs, and wolves. She said: “We want to understand this triad. People say a lot of things about wolves, dogs and humans: how they are similar or how they are different. But the truth is that we are only at the beginning of understanding minds. wolves and dogs" (251).
