  • Essay / Persuasive Essay on Lowering the Drinking Age - 1241

Smoking is responsible for more than 480,000 deaths per year in the United States, including approximately 41,000 deaths resulting from exposure to second-hand smoke. This represents approximately one in five deaths per year, or 1,300 deaths per day (“Fast Facts”). Everyone knows how much harm smoking causes to someone on a daily basis, but it remains one of the best-selling items every day in America. Lowering the drinking age would help the economy enormously. Many more people would be legally allowed to drink in restaurants, bars and other licensed establishments (Harwood). The income of private business owners would increase and the government would collect a greater amount of tax revenue, and we all know that government loves money. The government should make it up to us “adults” to prove ourselves and validate that we can have a few drinks on the weekend after a long school or a long job.
