Essay / How to Help Euthanize Animals in Shelters - 648
According to the Humane Society of the United States, more than 6 to 8 million animals are registered in shelters each year. Of these 6 to 8 million animals, 3 to 4 million are euthanized due to animal overpopulation. Euthanasia of animals in shelters must stop. Shelters are there to help people find their lost pets or give them a loving new home, not to kill healthy animals that still have life. There are a few ways to stop this situation: mandating the spaying or neutering of animals by law, taxing citizens to help fund shelters, or banning cage shelters funded by fundraisers. Animals euthanized in shelters due to overpopulation are not always sickly or aggressive. Millions of healthy animals are killed for no reason other than there isn't enough room for them or they can't afford to care for them. Over the past 40 years, America has reduced the percentage of animals euthanized from 25% to 3%. With a little more effort, euthanasia of healthy animals could disappear in the coming years. Making spaying or neutering of animals a law is somewhat of an easy solution. When a cat or dog comes to a veterinarian to be vaccinated, as all require, the veterinarian can keep said animal and treat it himself. However, all of these procedures require payment, so for owners to be able to recover their animals, they must pay the costs of the operation. However, if all cats and dogs were fixed, it would end all dogs and cats. So, in order for animals to remain regulated without disappearing, only certified breeders could have animals that are not spayed or neutered. This would work to some extent, but people would try to work around it and simply not take their pets to the vet, leading to more sick pets. And... middle of paper... factories but they have to adopt from shelters because every adoption saves a life from death. Works Cited “Uncompromising Animal Rights: No-Kill Shelters”.
