Today, more than ever, teenage girls are influenced by magazines, billboards, television, movies and especially advertising. While advertisements of flawless models may sell products, the effects on teenage girls are undeniable. Over the past decade, the number of depressions, eating disorders and hypersexuality among young girls has continued to increase. False advertising in the form of airbrushing, heavy retouching, and Photoshopping models has had negative effects on teenage girls, and according to Federal Trade Commission (FTC) policy, false advertising is illegal. It may be an exaggeration to call Photoshopping false advertising, but nonetheless manipulating impressionable young girls into believing that a product will make them slim, beautiful and popular is false advertising and, as noted above, is illegal under the standards set by the FTC. False advertising is defined as advertising, other than labeling, that is misleading in a material respect (uslegal.com). The FTC's policy states that anything that is likely to mislead consumers acting reasonably in the circumstances and that is material to a consumer's decision to purchase or use the product (Advertising FAQ's: A, 2001). In the past, there have been some blatantly obvious cases. cases of deception in advertising, such as the case of Listerine mouthwash which is a remedy for problems such as colds, sore throats and even dandruff.
