  • Essay / A Merry Night at Lamar University - 1725

Lamar University hosted an incredible performance by the Lamar University Dance Company on November 19th and 20th. The show blended a mix of modern, hip-hop and ballet through a series of eight distinct dances. The dance ended with a half-hour performance called Games which seemed to be the focal point of the entire show. Each dance consisted of two to seven different dancers, while half of the dances used only female dances, a few dances used one to three male dancers. The whole show went well with thirty seconds of darkness that left the audience waiting for the next dance. The evening began with a dance titled “Our Best Bette,” which was divided into two distinct parts. The first part told the story of a group of girls fighting over a man. The dance went well as the beginning only showed one dancer and at the end five dancers appeared on stage. The synchronization of the dancers allowed the audience's eyes to focus more on the story than the dance itself, but when one dancer separated from the group, they seemed a little harder to follow. A dancer broke away from the group on the far left of the stage. This pause made it harder to follow the story depending on where the viewer was sitting. The solo dancer performed a different dance from the group. After a few minutes, the setting changed once again. A dancer appeared on stage in an outfit different from that of the dancers. The dancers wore what seemed normal for ballet dancers. The dancer, on the other hand, wore blue jeans and a shirt. The viewer might believe that the focal point has transformed into him at this point. Likewise with solo dancer Earl...... middle of paper ......l theme, ballet. All the dances used some sort of ballet technique in one way or another. Even though music is not necessary for dancing, the music helped connect the audience to the entire show. The directors and dancers should have been proud of these two evenings because the audience definitely left with smiles and new memories. Lamar University Dance Company's Fun & Games was a joyous event and made it a joyous evening. Works Cited Gargulinski, Ryn. “How to use props in modern dance.” ehow. March 2, 2009. the web.
