    1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY There has been a surge of faith-based organizations in postcolonial Zimbabwe. Faith-based organizations have contributed positively to Zimbabwean society, although they have been neglected and few studies have been done on these organizations. Only secular organizations have been well studied and therefore unfairly treated by faith-based organizations. Faith-based organizations have a religious basis in the work they are involved in, unlike non-governmental organizations which have no religious attachment to them. Faith-based organizations and NGOs may be involved in the same work, i.e. advocacy or humanitarian aid, but they differ when it comes to religious ties. Some argue, however, that faith-based organizations are a form of NGOs in that they all focus on development and offer aid, whether financial or humanitarian. The need to resolve the crisis in Zimbabwe has pushed many faith-based organizations to actively participate and engage in issues affecting the country. Organizations such as the Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace in Zimbabwe and the Zimbabwe Council of Churches were active in the country before independence, but from the late 1990s many organizations were established. This increase may be due to the absenteeism of the rule of law that these faith-based organizations wanted to end, as well as the availability of foreign donors willing to sponsor development and faith-based organizations.
