  • Essay / Black on Black Racism - 1989

SummaryThe days of cotton picking and the slave hierarchy are long gone, but the colonial mentality of disunity may still exist among African Americans. Some of the major conflicts that remain at the heart of this disunity include: black-on-black crime, beauty and self-esteem, and the overrepresentation of black people in the criminal justice system. Although there are many reasons supporting these conflicts, it is questionable whether the arrival of black social identity in America is the origin of these conflicts. The purpose of this quantitative study is to explore the effects of black racial attitudes on images. of themselves with varying skin tones. Complementary to the study of attitudes and images, the theory of social identity will be a reference source. This study also includes the element of discrimination called intraracism. This term refers to discrimination that exists between members of the same race. Another term referring to this type of discrimination is called colorism. This term refers to “discrimination in which human beings are subjected to different social treatment based on skin color (Wikipedia, 2010). Historically, "light skin" refers to individuals who are half-white with fine hair or whose complexion is lighter than a paper bag. “Dark-skinned” individuals do not have European physical characteristics, have coarse hair and a complexion darker than a paper bag. In this study, images of black people will be determined by three measures: beauty, intelligence and criminal behavior. Two hundred black men and two hundred light- and dark-skinned women, ages 21 to 45, from the Atlanta area will participate in the study. Each participant will see four photos of the two blacks...... middle of paper...... 50Female 50Skin tone (%)Light 50Dark 50*Actual research will determine the numbersAppendix BLikert scales - measuring independent variablesWhich year of birth ? _____________Please rate the following images using the three scales: Attractiveness1.
