On July 4 each year, Americans around the world celebrate Independence Day, the day the United States declared its independence from Great Britain. Brittany. The Declaration of Independence was successful using various types of support, ethos (ethics), pathos (emotion) and logos (logic). The first paragraph lays out the logic (logos) behind people separating themselves from their government in a way that grabs the reader's attention. It makes no mention of any particular people or country, so the opening paragraph does a great job of grabbing someone's attention. By appealing to the human desire to be free by referring to the "laws of nature" and the rights of "Nature's God," Thomas Jefferson makes a profound statement but leaves the reader curious as to how it will be applied. After using logic, the author builds on the first paragraph by appealing to the reader's emotions (pathos) when using words like "We", "these", "Colonies" and "Great Britain ". Thomas Jefferson uses the second paragraph to recommend what the colonists should do by stating, "We hold these truths to be self-evident" in order to make the reader feel like they are part of the story that is about to unfold. It indicates not only when a government should be changed, but also when it "should not be changed for light and passing reasons", helping to convince those who sided with Britain that the colonists understood that governments are not perfect (Jefferson). Subsequently, Thomas Jefferson submits the facts "to a candid world," providing ethical support (ethos) by listing twenty-seven grievances that the colonies had against Great Britain. Using an emotional ending helps Thomas Jefferson leave a lasting impression on the reader and contributes to the success of this document. They would see that the colonists went to war for their independence, received aid from other nations, and now have their own government.
