Rising medical costs are a global problem, but nowhere are they higher than in the United States. Although Americans with good health insurance coverage can receive the best medical treatment in the world, the health of the average American, measured by life expectancy and infant mortality, is below the average of other major industrialized countries. Inefficiency, fraud, and the cost of malpractice suits are often blamed for high costs in the United States, but the main reason is overinvestment in technology and personnel. There are three problems with rising health care costs. The first is the rising cost of prescription drugs. The second area of increasing costs involves increasing technology in the medical sector. The third problem is the aging of the population. Prescription drugs are the area where health care costs are growing the fastest, and are projected to increase by 20 to 30 percent each year for the next few years. There are many newer, more expensive medications on the market, and the use of these prescription drugs is exploding. Additionally, with so much television advertising, many consumers ask their doctors for expensive brand-name medications when there may be a generic medication that works just as well. Over the past decade, scientists have made significant advances in the treatment of certain diseases. .
