Essay / Shakespeare: The King of Irony - 1253
The wise Anatole France once said: “Irony is the cheerfulness of reflection and the joy of wisdom. » This means that irony is a fun thing that wise people can use in their writing. Shakespeare is certainly one of the wise men who knew how to use irony in their writings. This is most clearly seen in the play Romeo and Juliet. In this piece he used all three types of irony incredibly well. All for the sole purpose of making the book enjoyable/better. The three types of irony he used, as you must know, are verbal irony, dramatic irony, and situational irony. Each type adds an extra dimension to the book. Which, in turn, makes the book better and enjoyable/better. To begin with, Shakespeare uses verbal irony in the play to make the book enjoyable/better. Although there are many types of verbal irony, Shakespeare uses word play the most in this particular play. For example, at Capulet's party, Romeo feels depressed and does not want to dance when Mercutio asks him to. That’s why he answers: “No, believe me, you have dancing/nimble-soled shoes; I have a sole of lead/ So pin me to the ground, I can't move” (I,iv,14-17). In these three lines, Shakespeare can refer to the soles of Mercutio's shoes and the soul of Romeo; using verbal irony. By using this play on words, Shakespeare is able to emphasize how sad Romeo is. So much so that the reader understands what Romeo is feeling, and through this understanding, the reader can enjoy the book more. Then, when Tybalt mortally wounds Mercutio, Mercutio says before dying: “Ask me tomorrow and you will find me a serious man” (III, i, 98-99). Mercutio is clearly making a pun on the word “grave”. This shows that even in death, he continues to make jokes. The reader will find this to be something which, in the middle of the paper, seems to be of great dignity, but which also lacks dignity. Here, Shakespeare uses situational irony to add humor to the play. Which helps to increase readers' interest in the piece and totally improve it. By applying situational irony in the play, Shakespeare is able to attract the reader and enhance the play. Considering all these points, Shakespeare has beautifully incorporated all three types of irony in an astonishing way. He used each of them for a specific purpose, but all resulted in making the room better and more enjoyable. He showed that irony is the joy of wisdom, because he entertained people with irony. He was able to take his wisdom and apply it to the benefit of the people of his time, but also of our time. All this using irony. For someone to be able to use just one writing tool is amazing. Shakespeare is therefore certainly the king of irony..
