  • Essay / Gerard Hendrik Hofstede's Value Dimensions:...

BODYHofstede's Value Dimensions (Hofstede)In order to better understand Chinese culture in business and daily social life, it is useful to examine the cultural dimensions of Hofstede in China. Hofstede's dimensions include: power distance, individualism, masculinity, uncertainty avoidance, pragmatism, and goal orientation. To begin with, China has a very large power distance with a score of eighty. Unlike America, people who hold power, such as bosses or very wealthy people, will not interact with those who are considered to be on the lower end of society. This also applies to men and their hierarchy in relation to women, which has only recently started to balance out. In the individualism category, China scored a low score of twenty. This makes China a group-oriented culture and means that most of their decisions will be based on what would best benefit those around them. In the United States, we consider employing close friends or family members a “conflict of interest.” However, this belief is completely opposite in China, and it seems to be the social norm. China is considered a masculine society, with a score of sixty-six. Being a male society is seen as being success-oriented and driven, making everything a competition. It is known that members of a Chinese family choose work over family in order to succeed. They will work long hours and travel long distances from home if the pay is better elsewhere. Even children compete every year to get the best test scores, and the ranking system in their schools is much bigger than in America. When it comes to adaptability, the Chinese are considered masters. With a score of thirty on the uncertainty avoidance scale, ...... middle of paper ...... good deal that benefits them the most. Again, body language is important and you should never show any signs of anger or frustration.
