Essay / Bigoted Hate - 745
Do you know what prejudice really represents? Prejudice means “an unfavorable opinion or feeling formed in advance or without knowledge, thought or reason” (“prejudice”). Some types of prejudice are racial discrimination, age discrimination, and sex discrimination (McLeod). The people responsible for a person's prejudices are those people's families. Families determine people's attitudes toward religions and give rise to prejudices ("Chapter 2"). Prejudice has been evident throughout history, from African Americans since their arrival to Jews and others persecuted during the Holocaust, while intimidation occurs from migrant workers, the disabled and even ordinary people. Mainly, there are several cases that were unfair and did not do justice to people of color. An example is the case of Plessey v. Ferguson. Plessey was arrested for sitting in a white car, despite having one white and one black parent ("Plessy v. Ferguson (1896)"). Plessey's attorney argued that the case violated the 13th and 14th Amendments, but Plessey ultimately lost because he was legally black ("Plessy v. Ferguson (1896)"). Although there were many injustices against black people, there were also very influential black men and women. The most famous black man between 1895 and 1915 was Booker T. Washington (PBS). He once said, “In all that is purely social we may be as separate as the finger, but united as the hand in all that is essential to neutral progress” (PBS). This relates to the novel “Roll of Thunder, Hear”. My Cry” because in the novel, black people were treated unfairly, just like Homer Plessey. In the novel, TJ Avery and 2 other white people broke into a store and were caught stealing items. So...in the middle of the article......about the opportunities available to the average white child ("Our Goal"). This organization also attempts to reduce unemployment rates among African Americans (“Our Goal”). Basically, Community Change attempts to equalize the lives of African Americans and Latinos with those of whites or Caucasians. For the reasons above, racism is not acceptable. We have the case where Homer Plessy had to go to jail for sitting in a white car. Then people were killed and persecuted because of the religion they followed. One of the most common forms of prejudice is bullying, where children are bullied because they are different from others. It’s a good thing that organizations like Community Change have taken the lead in the fight against racism. I think this is all unfair and more organizations, like Community Change, should not start working to improve conditions..
