Essay / Psychological Comfort in White Noise by Don Delillo
In modern society, exceptional technology has brought humans to a bright new era where people are more likely to appreciate materiality. Then other issues are raised by technological development and more involved in human emotions and basic desires. For example, in the novel “White Noise” by Don Delillo, the fear of death is emphasized and given in a new definition that adapts to this unbalanced modern society, overwhelmed by all kinds of information from mass media. People unconsciously become more devoted to the stories that the media has invented for them, distracting from the awareness of death by focusing on the mass media culture that is an offshoot of this modern society. Eventually, people become overwhelmed by these mass media “plots” to get away from something that ironically weaken their basic abilities in life. These advertisements and information on television have a major impact on the human brain by reducing the ability to think. In the novel "White Noise" by Don Delillo, Babette forced her family to watch television to be safe from the negative effects of the media. “She seemed to think that if children watched television one evening a week with their parents or in-laws, it would have the effect of deglamorizing the medium in their eyes” (16). In fact, the behavior she adopts would only draw a vague line. in children's brains, which simply harness the ability to feel in the real world. This main goal of teaching people to be mean and tough as the best way to survive seems dubious, as Jack thought "The party was actually a subtle form of punishment for all of us... Denise used these opportunities to advise the girl on tenacity, the need to be mean in the world, to think hard (16) Human beings are emotional... middle of paper... and the more death will overwhelm them However, whatever. are the topics, their definition changes as the times change By listening to too much negative information from the media, people's thinking and feeling skills gradually lose Babette's naive idea of bringing the whole family into the picture. challenge of preparing for the world; people's decision to buy an SUV for their "safety" Jack's family buys their own satisfaction and the conversation between Jack and Murray about taking a stand on death; error by the unbalanced balance of their physical and psychological life. All these “plots” that lead these people to adopt a bad perspective in life, prevent them from finding the truth about themselves, as if they bring them the psychological comfort of materiality; and this becomes the most common type of life in this society.
