  • Essay / Harassment and school violence: Colombine high school...

“Two armed men enter the school and open fire”. This is the headline seen and heard in all the newspapers, radio and television news after the now infamous Columbine High School shooting on April 20, 1999. The details of this shooting were not immediately revealed. However, when they did, the entire nation was completely shocked. To begin, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, ages 17 and 18, entered their school with an assortment of guns, knives, and bombs, ready and willing to kill every individual in the high school. This begs the question “Why?” What was the reason for this sad and radical decision? The public would soon know the answer. The investigation later showed that Harris and Klebold were subjected to constant bullying, which contributed greatly to their decision to walk into their high school and open fire on their peers and administrators. Little did the public know that this would only be the beginning of many bullying-related school shootings. In fact, Columbine was the first major incident to highlight the problem of bullying. Because of these findings, many 21st century schools have adopted anti-bullying programs to help stop harassment. However, anti-bullying programs are not effective, nor are they as successful as they should be, showing that there is no solution to completely end the growing problem of bullying. Many people find the word “bullying” difficult to define. In fact, the definition of the word has changed a lot over the past ten years. The current definition of bullying, according to stopbullying.gov, is "aggressive, unwanted behavior among school-age children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance." The behavior has recurred, or has the potential to recur over time...... middle of log ...... failing to resolve the bullying problem. " International Journal on World Peace 30.2 (2013): 71+.
