Essay / The Media Must Regulate Itself - 643
Earlier in the semester, our class read the book “Entertained to Death” by Neil Postman. This literary piece discussed the concept that everything related to media is becoming more and more "entertaining." This meant that groups such as news organizations were increasingly concerned less with breaking news and more with the number of viewers they attracted. It also meant that trivial and stupid programs such as comedies were, and still are, replacing programs such as intellectual drama documentaries. This process only became possible because the power and influence of the media began to increase, and the media could do whatever it wanted. Unlimited media freedom could become a problem, but many people say the government cannot get involved in media expression because it would infringe on the basic constitutional rights of free speech and freedom of the press . The solution of media self-regulation was therefore proposed. Media self-regulation occurs when organizations voluntarily obey decisions adopted by a board of directors composed of people associated with the media. There are many examples of attempts at media self-regulation in the United States, all with varying degrees of success. It is evident that there are very effective regulations due to the classification of films and video games, and the fact that there is a lack of adult content on television channels labeled "for children" and to periods when more children are watching others. “classic” channels. However, even these successes are only fleeting successes. It is possible to release unrated films, the only reason there aren't as many is that very few theaters show unrated films. Additionally, there are still mature programs that are broadcast... middle of paper ... what times can certain content be broadcast on TV, how old people must be or at least should be to see specific content (audience rankings), and whether certain channels can broadcast certain types of content. I think it would be fair if there were laws banning adult content on channels aimed primarily at children, laws requiring movies to be rated, or even laws banning adult content between 7:00 a.m. and noon. a time when there are often young children watching television. Some of these laws may require additional elements to make them fair, such as the law that requires audiences to also require theaters to give equal airtime to all films. The government will not benefit from its power over the media if we, America as a whole, do not allow it. Some government influence over the media is the only way to properly regulate the media.
