The Discover Magazine periodical is a publication published at monthly intervals containing articles, stories, photographs and advertisements. Many topics are covered in the magazine, with scientific context in each section of the magazine's content. Within the departments there are various subjects such as health and medicine, living world, environment and others. The subject is science. “Experience an exciting adventure with Discover magazine that reports on exciting developments in science, medicine, technology and the world around us. Spectacular photographs and refreshing, understandable stories about complex topics connect ordinary people with the greatest scientific ideas and minds” (discovermagazine.com). The emphasis on science has remained intact since the publication of the first issue. The first issue was introduced in October 1980, Implantable cardiac defibrillators and in-dash computers were among the latest cutting-edge technology topics, with James Gorman's article "Creationism on the Rise" being written on evolution. Leon Jaroff of Time Inc. in New York was the first editor and helped launch Discover Magazine. (Kleeman) Over the next two decades of the magazine's existence, a total of four different owners would become part of the magazine's history before the current owners, Kalmbach Publishing Co. Kalmbach Co. is the publisher of Astronomy magazine, and with the addition of Discover that it has the potential to become leader in the scientific magazine category in terms of sales. (Eicher) Besides the obvious intention of making money, the magazine has a purpose. By analyzing the content, advertisements and publication history of Discover magazine, it can be concluded that the focus on the medium of paper inside the magazine keeps the reader eager to learn more about the planet. and the galaxies beyond and it will continue to make an understandable connection between complex stories and topics.
