  • Essay / The American dream in The Great Gatsby. F. Scott...

For some people in this world, the most important thing is achieving their American dream. The American dream has changed over the years, but one thing that hasn't changed is how important that dream is to people. A good example of the importance of the American dream is The Great Gatsby. F. Scott Fitzgerald puts a lot of detail and mystery into his book trying to make people think about what each character's dream was. Fitzgerald also uses his characters to describe the different types of dreams people have, including money, love, and acceptance. These three things have changed over the years, but some of them are still somewhat the same since this book was written. Money has always been something people have wanted, from the beginning of the colonization of America until today. Everyone always wants to work hard to earn money or get married, like Daisy. “She wanted her life now, immediately – and the decision must be made by a force – love, money – that was at hand (Fitzgerald 96). » In this part of the book, Daisy was still in love with Gatsby but she knew he was not rich. She already wanted to start her life with someone who could give her what she wanted. His American dream was to have someone who could give him a better life. She met that someone in Tom. In this situation, money is usually associated with property and security. Today, people have identified their American dream as homeownership and security (Kadlec 1). Now people just want to feel like their lives are taken care of from the start. They don't want to worry about being in debt or having financial problems. So they try to solve this problem by making it the most important goal of their life, their American dream. Ano...... middle of paper ...... tell how much time has passed. Everyone's American dream is important and everyone is willing to try anything to achieve their dream. Works Cited: Fitzgerald, F. Scott and Matthew J. Bruccoli. The Great Gatsby.
