The Pentecostal movement is made up of different churches grouped together because of the similar belief in the physical manifestation of the Holy Spirit. In the mid-19th century, some teaching of personal holiness began among Protestant groups who claimed that after conversion a second experience was likely in which the convert would be brought into a state of purification from sin as he prepared for a life in Christ. This manifestation of spiritual power in the Azusa St Mission in Los Angeles is considered the beginning of the modern Pentecostal movement in 1906. As Pentecostalism is a spirit-directed belief system, the original Protestant Reformation movement was a spirit-led belief system focused on the Word. The Pentecostal movement is generally associated with strongly charismatic individuals and appears to be growing in a self-sustaining manner in the United Kingdom, Australia, India, South Africa and the United States.
