Ann Yearsley's romantic poem The Shepherdess Does Not Care About Colin involves many connections to relationships, as does Christopher Marlowe's play Doctor Faustus, but they both do so in different ways. manners. Yearsley's poem is about romance and love. The boyfriend called Colin proposed to her and she refused because she knows that acceptance would relegate her to a more subordinate status. She also wants Colin to be embarrassed because seduction would take away his independence. The first relationship noticed is that between Faustus and his student Wagner who represents someone who does not understand his master or what is happening to him. Wagner then tries to imitate Faustus in many areas and tries to take upon himself, to activate all the power that his master demonstrates. This can also be seen in Ansley's poem, where it is believed that Colin, who is the groom, proposed to the character, resulting in the young woman giving up her freedom. “I will keep my freedom,” which shows that she does not want to lose her freedom and be controlled by anyone. This may be due to a past relationship that went bad so she has trust issues or she may have fallen for someone too easily and quickly. It's similar to what happened with Faustus and magic, and it's now coming back to haunt him because he dies younger. Another comparison between these two passages is that they do not want to be controlled and want to dominate. However, they both have a way of being dominated. For example, Yearsley's character would be tied to marriage while Wagner would be Faustus' student and would have to stay by his side, which is clearly not what he wants. The proposal, we presume, occurs in the poem and the refusal which we believe to be married, is also v...... middle of paper ......him plays the lyre, hides his feelings. This is because she becomes very frustrated: “What arts must I demonstrate to woo a soul like yours? This again, shows Colin's cowardly attitude towards the girl, and how he used her in a way, that Faustus uses Mephistopheles. The word used in Ansley's poem is a very romantic and dominant choice, however at the end of each line the words tend to oppose each other, for example, "mistake" and "love". You wouldn't normally put these two words together, and I think it adds to the overall tone of the poem and also summarizes the topic of the poem. However, when you look at Faustus, you start to see a different type of word choice, with the words used here being much darker, such as "hell" and "sin". This gives the overall tone of the book an envious tone and contrasts with the poem, which is more about love and romance..
