Friedan fails to recognize other classes and races such as lower class African American individuals. It was almost as if these individuals didn't exist to her. Additionally, Hook's highlighted the fact that African Americans faced "double bars" because they were both a woman and an African American. For such an influential piece of writing, it is unfortunate that The Feminine Mystique neglects to acknowledge individuals other than upper-middle-class whites.
