Essay / Contributors to the Death of the Star-Crossed Lovers:...
Contributors to the Death of the Star-Crossed LoversThe tragedy of Romeo and Juliet could easily have been avoided. The play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare is the tragedy of two lovers from rival families. Families have been arguing since ancient times, while the younger generation keeps the feud alive. Romeo, a Montague, and Juliet, a Capulet both love each other, but realize that fate is not on their side since they come from feuding families. Some characters contribute more than others to Juliette's death. The actions of Lord Capulet, Tybalt, and Friar Laurence cumulatively lead to Juliet's death. Many believe that Lord Capulet cannot be held responsible for Juliet's death since he does everything for Juliet; however, his actions indicate that he should be held responsible for Juliette's tragic disappearance. Lord Capulet clearly cares about Juliet since he wants her to marry Count Paris because he thinks she is overcome with grief, showing that he is a caring parent and would not not that she dies. One of the reasons for resenting him is that when Juliette disagrees with her father about her marriage to Count Paris, he threatens to disown her from the family. He states: “I tell you what – bring yourself to church on a Thursday/Or never look me in the face again” (III.iv.161-162). Lord Capulet really doesn't care about Juliet's feelings as he threatens to disown her. . Juliette's feelings are clearly hurt by this and she feels betrayed that her father would do such a thing. Her feeling of betrayal leads her to seek help from the only person she believes could help her, Brother Laurence. Another reason why Juliet's father may be blamed is that when Juliet finally "agrees" to marry Paris, Lord Capulet decides to bring the ...... middle of paper ...... could end the feud between the Capulets and the Montagues. . Unfortunately, Brother Laurence's decision was not the right one since the marriage ultimately resulted in Juliette's death. Friar Laurence's secrecy, poor judgment, insight, and lack of communication are major flaws in his character that led to the deaths of the two star-crossed lovers, Romeo and Juliet. The actions of Lord Capulet, Tybalt, and Friar Laurence contribute to Juliet's ultimate demise. Lord Capulet may seem like a good father, but his inner motivations are not on Juliet's side. Tybalt's passion and thirst for revenge lead to a chain of events that ultimately end the lives of Romeo and Juliet, while Friar Laurence's poor judgment and perspicacity contributed to the two lovers' downfall. If these three people had made even the slightest change in their character, the tragedy could have been avoided..
