Essay / Case Study: Identity Performance at the Phonathon
The setting has the effect of enhancing the performance, allowing the actors to convey a more meaningful performance. In the context of Phonathon, the room where the caller works, or the “stage” in which they perform, plays an important role in creating the perfect environment for the performance. When I started working at Phonathon, the call center consisted of long tables arranged around the four walls of the room. Each caller faced a wall, and there was no wall separating each caller's computers or workspace. The space was open, with a table in the middle of the room where the supervisors sat. The openness of the space was intimidating. Callers at the time felt that the openness of the space made them more aware of their behaviors and actions while on the phone. In a sense, the opening of space would function as a limiting factor for the development of personalities and the reiteration of behaviors.
