    Throughout the 1800s, many compromises were created in an attempt to bring two nations together to form a more perfect government. The North and the South have different views which have created many conflicts between the two sides. Congress continued to address controversial issues with compromises that only benefited one party or the other, not both. These compromises affected the North and the South; however, they began to escalate significantly because the two sides had economic, social, and political differences. The North had an industrial economy and the South focused on an agricultural economy. This has created many questions about what rates to charge. The South wanted tariffs placed on agricultural products such as cotton, tobacco, etc. This was in contrast to the North as they wanted tariffs placed on manufactured goods to benefit the Northern economy. The North created a tariff called the Tariff of Abominations which made products purchased in Europe more expensive.
