Essay / Academic Cultures - 1046
Primary research is a type of research in which a researcher will have to carry out, for example, surveys and interviews themselves. This form of research is important to academic cultures because they create and conduct their own experience. The results of the experiment are new discoveries that no one has altered. The three academic cultures that we have learned throughout this semester are the humanities, the social sciences and the natural sciences. The aim of natural sciences is to study everything that exists in the universe. Often scientists in academic culture create things that are not part of the natural world. Some of the disciplines in this academic culture are biology, mathematics, chemistry and engineering. Epistemology is the theory that in my secondary research, many scientists have discovered that video games can actually benefit the person in many ways! For example, a scientist conducted an experiment in which he found that video games can benefit the player in terms of spatial performance, reading skills, academic abilities, and self-esteem (Witt al. 2011). These characteristics can improve a person's mental abilities, especially reading, as they can help elementary school students improve their reading skills to a level they will enjoy. When you conduct experiments, society will be your biggest critic. If I didn't report the study to the participants, I could get into legal trouble with the Office of Research Integrity and possibly the company. In conclusion, my study focuses on whether video games can benefit you or be used against you. I used my psychological background which comes from social sciences as academic culture. In the future, I hope to be able to conduct my own experiment and be able to send it to the research office.
