Over the past 50 years, Norway has seen an increase in its immigrant population. After the economic boom of the 1960s, more and more people began to move to the country in hopes of a better life. This in turn increased immigration as more people emigrated to live with their families. When immigration levels peaked in 1975, the government imposed an "immigration halt" preventing people from settling in the country. In 1988, an immigration law was passed, allowing immigrants to enter, but under certain conditions. (Cooper, 2005). Although immigration levels have remained consistently high over the years, Norway has recently seen a decline in the number of asylum applications. In the last month of March alone, application levels fell by 39% and 40% in February (Asylum Applications Take a Plunge, 2010). Lately, the most recent asylum seekers have been people persecuted for their political opinions or religious beliefs in much less developed countries such as Afghanistan, Iraq, Somalia and Eritrea (Norway, 2009).
