Essay / Huck vs. Holden - 1042
Huck Finn, the protagonist of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn written by Mark Twain, comes from a poor family and has the lowest status in white society. He is around 13 years old. He wants to regain his freedom and begins his journey with a black slave named Jim. Holden Caulfield, the protagonist of The Catcher in the Rye written by JD Salinger, is expelled from a school called Pencey Prep. He comes from a rich family and is around 17 years old. He wants to escape this false society and flees alone to New York. Despite the background differences between Huck and Holden, there are still many similarities and differences between them. Both Huck and Holden are individualists and try to escape their society. Huck doesn't care about rules and he doesn't want to follow Widow Douglas's strict rules. He just wants to be individual and have a natural life instead of being civilized. “I didn't want to go back to the widow's house and live in such a 'civilized' way, as they called it. Later, Huck is imprisoned by his abusive father, Pap, and has no freedom. After Pap's attempt to kill Huck while Pap is drunk, Huck decides to leave and go to Jackson Island. “All I wanted was to go somewhere; all I wanted was a change. He wants to live his own way and seek freedom. Likewise, Holden is an individual who does not conform to society. For example, he loves wearing his red hunting hat with the visor backwards. “It was this red hunting hat, with one of those really, really long tips. The way I wore it, I flipped the old visor backwards - very cheesy, I admit, but I liked it that way. This shows that he wants to be unique and different from others. He thinks it's in the middle of paper...pay them. However, when Maurice pins Holden against the wall, Holden shouts, "If you bully me, I'll scream like hell." I'm going to wake everyone in the hotel. The police and everything. The only thing Holden does to resist is shouting things to threaten someone like a child. This shows that Holden is cowardly and helpless. In summary, Huck is valiant and fair while Holden is a bit cowardly and helpless. To conclude, both Huck and Holden are individualists and try to escape their societies. Huck is a brave boy with a sense of justice while Holden is a cowardly and helpless teenager. However, both have become more mature throughout their travels. So there are similarities and differences between them. Compared Huck to Holden, I like Huck more than Holden because I think we should always be brave and try to help others wisely..
