A Clockwork Orange Research Paper A Clockwork Orange takes place on the streets of a dark, mysterious and futuristic city. Alex, the 15-year-old leader of a violent gang who goes on a rampage: assault, convenience store robbery, fight between rival gangs, car theft, gang rape, vandalism and arson. Alex, who is seduced by all these acts of violence, ends up imprisoned for his crimes. Alex will undergo a “reform” treatment called the Ludovico Technique. A behavioral brainwashing procedure involving certain types of elements in its learning, the treatment would last approximately two weeks, after which the criminal would be completely incapable of thinking about committing such a complete crime. Alex will change his lifestyle and will currently try to live a "normal life". A Clockwork Orange is banned in many different places for many reasons including: the use of vulgar language, the details of rapes and gang fights and this attracts many quiet comments from the people. The novel also focuses heavily on ideas of free will, or how much of our personality and choices are inherently determined rather than learned. The beliefs described in the book are unorthodox and different from those of the people, which in retrospect will cause concern and contribute to the book being banned. Burgess uses a completely different type of writing style than most, as his use of an invented language called nadsat. Perhaps the most interesting thing about this book is the language. Alex thinks and speaks in the "nadsat" vocabulary of the future, notable by Burgess of several hundred words. (Hyman 25). Although the book may contain some unpleasant and disturbing scenes, it addresses very important topics about free will, good and evil that could be related to our modern society. One of the most frequently asked questions in the book is whether "a man who chooses evil is perhaps in some way better than a man on whom good is forced upon him" (Burgess 109 Marmalade) . This will allow the reader to wonder freely and at will on this subject and to discuss for themselves. Banning the book only blinds people to the real truth of the world.
