  • Essay / A virtual generation: the negative impact of social media on...

In a world filled with technology, it is difficult to escape the grip of social media as it has been integrated into our lives daily. We almost instinctively pull out our cell phones in the middle of a boring conversation and look at our Instagram feed without a second thought. Many of us are guilty of spending an unreasonably long time without even recognizing that it's a problem. What if these small actions lead to a misconception of what society should be? Ultimately, are the risks serious enough that the problems stop? What if social networks affected our relationships with others, our grades and our private life? In many ways, it is. Social media has a negative impact on our generation. “We live in a technological universe in which we communicate constantly. And yet we have sacrificed conversation in favor of simple connection. » (Turkle, 1) The increase in social media has negatively affected communication and relationship skills. In our modern world, face-to-face relationships are neglected, they are obsolete, a skill of the past. Face-to-face communication is being lost due to our devices, social media and the development of new technologies. The problem now is that people prefer to communicate via text messages rather than face-to-face conversations. “Coffee dates are a thing of the past; now, if a person wants to get to know someone better, they can simply browse their Facebook profile to discover their interests. (Loch, 1) When we learn about people through social media and the internet, there is no emotional connection. We can't sense the tone of their voice, their facial expression, or whether the information is true. These things are not present when texting - we can't tell how things are said and a middle...... middle of paper ...... all devices lead to decline of social skills. " University Chronicle.
