Breaking Binaries: Common Confusion in TV and FilmYou are gender fluid and most likely gender queer, or did you not know that. Of course not. You literally don't know the meaning of the words. When analyzing gender, society generally thinks of two strong binary entities, male or female, but gender is an ambiguous term, and you may reject this label assigned to you if you do not identify with that gender . When we talk about gender as an identity, we must recognize it as a combination of an infinite amount of experiences, preferences and styles. Gender is also a learned and incomplete perspective on how to identify as male or female, or as masculine or feminine. This is not the purpose of the genre; This does not mean that the man and the woman are wrong. Rather, they are two plot points (common terms) on an infinite line of possible identifications. Most people simply aren't informed enough to understand the past of exploration or between these binaries. One of the most powerful agents of social change in media is television, but writers and producers do not fully realize the power they hold in educating viewers about gender norms, resulting in under -representation of many gender identities; particularly Genderqueer and Gender Fluid identities. Genderqueer identity encompasses a whole spectrum of expressions. This also serves as a bio-psycho-social interaction that results in our own unique personality. It is entirely possible that through this educational stagnation toward progressive gender construction, adolescents have no alternative models to associate their role preferences with. The first step to changing these gender norms is to recognize them. As Sam Killmann explains in The Soc...... middle of paper ...... amount of femininity or masculinity he feels that day. Alexander is a positive agent of change in that he wants to make the world understand that this identity exists and that there is nothing wrong with this identity. This current powerhouse in gender fluidity proves that Tumblr is an aspect of media that allows Genderqueer and Gender Fluid individuals to speak freely about who they are and help others shape who they want to be. After examining the aforementioned examples of unconventional gender norms in television and films, we see that they were only unconventional in the era and context in which they were released. We can further infer that there was a slight misrepresentation of Genderqueer and Gender Fluid identities, but there was mostly an underrepresentation which is currently beginning to blossom into full and positive representation..
