Essay / Building Information Modeling Protocol Exhibition by...
Published in 2008, the American Institute of Architects Building Information Modeling Protocol Exhibition was developed to establish guidelines for the use of BIM throughout a project. This is important as it addressed several outstanding questions such as responsibilities for each element of the model, permitted uses of the model, the extent to which users can rely on the model, management of the model and who supports load model property. After developing a model for a dormitory owned by New York University Polytechnic Institute, several examples can be presented that help support the exhibit's compliance with the Building Information Protocol. The responsibility of each individual element of a building information model was addressed. in General Provision 1.1 of the Protocol Annex, which states that specific responsibilities are assigned based on the development of each element of the model “at each phase of the project”. The model element, defined as an aspect of the BIM model that “represents a system or component within the building,” is created by an individual author who has taken responsibility for that element. Within a project, there are different phases that range from the initial conceptual phase to the start-up and rotation phase. These different phases of construction were defined in the protocol exposition as “development levels”. For example, Development Level 1 is equivalent to a pre-conceptual phase of construction, while Development Level 5 is considered a construction phase once construction is complete. These levels make it possible to describe the overall development of an element within the model itself. For practical purposes, a table format...... middle of paper ......e granted ownership in case he wished to use the model to operate and maintain the dormitory, such as with systems mechanical operation and control. The question of who owns the design is likely to generate controversy and other questions due to the legal nature of property rights. Additional contracts and documents may be required to complete the protocol exposure. When the initial development of a model is done incorrectly or poorly, it is possible that future users, such as contractors or even site managers, will create their own model with the intention of not integrating that model into that of architects. However, it is assumed that the dorm model was fully compliant with the exposed protocol, thereby minimizing the risk of future users not participating...
