Essay / Should downloading music be illegal? - 575
Many people like music. There is no situation where people don't feel the music. Some stores, for example, play music to make customers feel comfortable. In the past, people bought or rented CDs from stores, whereas today it is a common way to download music from websites like iTunes. Even though the widespread Internet allows people to get many types of music around the world, illegal downloading or sharing of music from the website becomes the problem. Recently, the number of people who download or share copyrighted material, such as music, has increased, so some people argue that downloading or sharing copyrighted material from of the Internet should be illegal. However, there are three reasons why downloading or sharing copyrighted material from the Internet should not be legal. First, it is impossible for the government to monitor not only illegal sites, but also the person who illegally downloads or shares copyrighted material. This is because the number of websites is countless. In fact, according to the Internet service provider's survey, more than 40 billion illegal files and sites are spread across the Internet. For example, India spent $8 million to recruit 500,000 cybersecurity specialists, but 75% of candidates did not pass the test and became cybersecurity specialists. It is difficult to get works that control illegal downloading; therefore, if the government goes after all illegal sites, it is wasting a lot of time and money. Additionally, when it comes to monitoring websites, privacy concerns arise. Now that the Internet is widespread throughout the world, the Internet is becoming the effective means of communication. The government monitors all websites or files visited by people. This act would constitute an invasion of privacy. Invading a personal date is not democracy but authoritarianism, thus destroying the democratic system. Additionally, downloading or sharing copyrighted material is also a good effect for artists as an advertisement to spread their names on the Internet. Musicians may have the chance to become popular as illegal downloading spreads music worldwide. For example, some popular musicians such as Justin Bieber, Katy Perry and Lady Gaga earn a lot of money not only from CD sales but also from other activities like live concerts or goods, while the majority musicians fail to succeed..
