  • Essay / Child Development Case Study - 1984

Isolation marks the beginning of the fifth stage, and this is noticed in the early stages of adulthood, when they begin to explore relationships personal. When a young adult creates a close, committed relationship, they succeed in feeling engaged and secure. Erikson believed that it was very important for a young adult to experience this stage because it will give them a sense of personal identity, essential for creating intimate relationships with others. Erikson realized that if a young adult did not experience these types of skills, they would suffer from emotional isolation or possible less committed relationships. As adults, they will begin the seventh stage of Generativity versus Stagnation. This is where the adult will begin to focus on their career and family. When an adult takes this step, they will be successful and feel a sense of contribution to the world. This is where they will begin to be active in their home and community. An adult who fails to learn this step will not be as productive and engaged in the world. When a child learns to be proud of these achievements, it will continue into adulthood and thus follow their life partner. The last stage is called Integrity versus Despair, which is noticed during their old age and they start looking back on their life. When they feel proud of what they have done and accomplished in their life, they will demonstrate integrity and have very little regret for what they have done. Now if they feel that their life has been ruined, they will feel many regrets and show signs of weakness.
