From what I understand, there are three levels of memory or the ability to have something printed in one's mind. One, conscious/awareness. In this state you are in contact with the outside world. You are present in the current situation you find yourself in. You are aware of what you are doing. Second, preconscious. In this state you are below the surface of consciousness. You are not fully aware of everything and nothing. It's like you're half awake and half asleep. The last, the third. Unconsciousness. In this state, your memories are repressed and pushed to the back of your mind. You may feel some familiarity, but you don't remember anything about it. This.
