It is the duty of our elders to educate us about history so that we can learn from it. Coates mentioned that because of what Malcolm wrote and protected, black beauty was never shown in movies or talked about in textbooks. Their society always showed that white people were always the most important, from “Jesus to George Washington” (Coates, 43). Why was teaching white history not yet questionable, it took years for schools to teach black history? He grew up learning that everything white was important and that it mattered even more. Coates also talks about how bad the schools were and that they never taught them about the real world and black history. The reason he always skipped classes at Howard University was because everything he was looking for was not in the classroom but in the library. Coates said, “I wanted to pursue things, to know things” (48). This explains his curiosity and interest in the truth and black history. History is one of the most important subjects for the student to develop their thinking and help them better understand society and why it is the way it is. Our history has shaped our society and the culture we live in and if we start to ignore it, future generations will never discover why the society they live in is the way it is and they will not be able to learn from it and learn from it. precautions to make this world a better place to live
