  • Essay / Hurricane Katrina Look Back - 956

In some parts of the world, hurricanes are a part of life and although Katrina appeared to be a violent and dangerous storm, many people living in the Gulf thought they would. would do. being able to handle what the storm had to offer. The storm itself, while dangerous and damaging, it was the infrastructure and taxes that really ended up making this disaster the scale it eventually became. Hurricane Katrina proved to be a storm that not only were citizens unable to cope with, but also the government was ill-prepared. The failure of proper planning and interoperability between cities and local governments was one of the biggest downfalls of Hurricane Katrina. There was virtually no communication between those who needed help and those who were able to provide that help. Those who had a means of communication were stuck on switchboards and didn't know if their desperate calls would be answered. The authorities did not have a reliable community or reliable methods to help community members in need. A major problem that is still relevant to our system of government and that played a huge role in the amount of time that passed before relief was provided comes down to bureaucratic "he said she said" tendencies. ". Each agency and staff claimed the other was not providing the details or information necessary at that level to help the other. FEMA claimed at one point in the aftermath of Katrina that Louisiana was acting to obtain some form of assistance, but had received details about what type of aid was required or what specific items were needed. A member of Louisiana's disaster relief efforts provided a 48-page document as proof to the public that he was asked for help in detail but that help never arrived (The... .. middle of paper ......ment stalled the project further (The Storm, 2005) Lessons that could have been learned from these mistakes include those of good planning, inspection and proper maintenance of the city, and better communication between states and agencies Overall, I believe Katrina shed a lot of light on the problems facing New Orleans and our country in matter of disaster management and communication as a whole However, I do not believe that we have solved the areas of great importance another disaster of the same magnitude, the results would differ only slightly.
