    The influence of ethical issues on the use of information technologiesThe use of computers poses a new challenge in terms of confidentiality. Privacy is a state of mind, a specific place free from intrusion or control over one's exposure to personal information (Czar, 2013). Nowadays, many new rules are coming into force to protect patient privacy. The purpose of this article is to discuss the importance of ethical use and unethical issues related to the use of technology, as well as the impact of specific and broad-spectrum legislation on information technologies. Importance of Ethical, Legal and Regulatory Issues and Information TechnologyIn nursing informatics, ethical principles play a vital role in our daily patient care. Nursing is based on the ethical principles of beneficence, fidelity, non-maleficence, autonomy, justice and truthfulness. These principles and other provisions establish a standard for nursing care. Nonmaleficence is the avoidance of harm or injury; core of the medical oath and nursing ethics (nursingworld.org, 2013). This is the first obligation of a nurse. In nursing informatics, non-maleficence should be a primary commitment. This is why privacy settings are set on computers; only authorized healthcare professionals are authorized to view certain information, so that confidentiality is preserved. Although more secure than paper, electronic medical records are problematic because they can be widely dispersed. (Simpson, RL (2006) Therefore, proper electronic documentation goes hand in hand with how these standards are met. Modern technology and the use of computer programs are a great asset to the medical community and the patient. As our society continues to advance in technology, we as nurses should also be in an advancement mindset to better serve and protect the privacy and well-being of our patients..
