It could be suggested that as part of their college curriculum they be required to take psychology courses and participate in group counseling sessions with professional photographers. If more mental preparation were provided, students could become more aware of the field in which they are going. Therefore, they would have the opportunity to make a serious personal assessment and decide whether, mentally, they were predisposed to cope with the demands of the job. The most important takeaway from Carter's story is the recognition of his legacy. That legacy should begin by focusing on his excellent body of work, compiled over decades in which he exposed some of the most difficult images of apartheid in South Africa. Second, his experience should influence his peers, hopefully inspiring them to seek help if necessary, to take time off from their duties, to ensure that they remain mentally stable following the horror and suffering they experienced.
