IntroductionIndividuals interested in pursuing a career in firefighting face many options when it comes to selecting a department to apply to. Achieving a career with Columbus Fire is often a goal of Central Ohio students, and for good reason. ProblemThe Columbus Fire Division is a large organization that hires candidates using a standard civil service hiring process every two years (unless not required). ). This means that if the city has enough employees at the end of the two-year cycle to continue operations, it can choose to forgo the testing process until it is needed. (City of Columbus)By nature, the public service hiring process does not give preference to candidates who have received training in their potential field. Regardless of an applicant's level of fire training, upon hire they will be required to attend the Ohio Fire Academy to obtain (or re-obtain) their State of Ohio firefighting certification of 240 hours. This means that fire science students aspiring to join the CFD will double their efforts. With more than 6,000 applicants in 2011, the chances of getting a position at CFD seem slim. The chances of landing a position with Columbus Fire may seem unrealistic to some, but I believe my research will show that there are many reasons why so many people want to work for Columbus Fire. Purpose and Scope The purpose of this report is to evaluate The Columbus Division of Fire as a potential employer for Columbus State fire science students. In this report, I will focus on the characteristics the Columbus Fire Division is looking for, as well as the city's hiring process, training requirements, benefits offered, and trial period. , promotion opportunities and departmental structure.
