    Social media is defined as websites and applications used for social networking, in other words, it is a medium for people to interact and express yourself without being face to face. Social networks now occupy an important place in the lives of adolescents, who constitute the majority of the population subject to the use of social networks in their daily lives. Many students face the need to balance their social lives with school and even sports, making priorities a big dilemma for them. American students are affected by social media in many ways, from their social lives to their happiness to their grades. Studies have shown that social media has a direct correlation with students' social lives. Teenagers in this period tend to crave social media; it has become a part of today's teenage culture. Phones, laptops, and tablets can be found in a typical college student's dorm room. These are the main components used by students for social media. It is very rare to find a student without a phone or laptop. Today, almost all teenagers have phones and use them to talk, text, and even tweet. It is said that students spend way too much time on social sites and on their phones. During my research, I came across an article titled “The Effects of Social Media on Students” by Wei Chen, and in that article there were statistics that showed the average time students spent on social media. The results showed that 73% of connected teens now use social media sites. Of these seventy-three percent of online students, 45% spend 4 to 6 hours, 20% spend 2 to 4 hours, 12% spend 0 to 2 hours, and 23% spend more than 8 hours on social media. "The results show that ... middle of paper ...... a lot of time on social media and on their phones, but at the same time they develop important social knowledge and skills. Social sites encourage negative behavior and tempt teens to participate in activities that can harm their lives. Social media also distracts students and causes them to perform poorly in class.
