  • Essay / How to Teach a Second Language - 887

Currently, teaching a second language is a very important task in most countries in the world, especially English as a universal language. Future teachers and even qualified teachers must be in constant preparation and improvement to achieve their goals with second language learners. Because of time, some things you learned are forgotten, put them into practice or some important considerations like knowing what can affect your students. , or implement appropriate opportunities for learners to practice the language during the course. According to Jim Scrivener (2011), the general ideas of someone who wants to teach a second language are: what a teacher's job is, what learners can do, and how they should work. Based on these ideas, before you start teaching, you should consider three main steps. First, you need to know the language, then you need to know the factors that affect second language acquisition and finally you need to learn appropriate strategies for teaching a second language. Thus, “teaching a second language is a process that requires mastery of the second language, understanding of the factors that affect the learner's learning and teaching methodologies”. The first step to teaching a second language is knowing the language. You cannot teach a second language if you do not have an appropriate language level. According to the “Common European Framework of Reference for Languages” or “Council of Europe” (as Scrivener mentions), it presents six statements to identify language level: A1 (elementary), A2 (pre-intermediate), B1 (intermediate), B2 (upper intermediate), C1 (advanced) and C2 (near native level). For example, in Chile, the second language that is taught in every school...... middle of article ...... requires mastery of the second language, reaching the minimum level required to teach a language second in each location. Second, we need to know the factors that affect their learning, this means knowing the characteristics of our students. And finally, teaching methodologies, knowing the most appropriate strategies depending on the group. Teaching can be very exciting when you have prepared your lessons correctly and effectively, especially considering the three steps already presented. All these steps combined make a teacher capable of teaching a second language and when teachers achieve the previously stated objectives, they will have completed this teaching process.
