Native Americans, notably the Chippewa Native Americans, honored an Indian god by naming this paradise area Winneboujou. The first settler to travel the river was Daniel Greysolon. The awe-inspiring beauty discovered during his expedition and the subsequent explorations of others sparked great enthusiasm as descriptions of the impressive rapids, alluring forest canopies and plethora of wildlife were reported.
