Essay / IntroductionAccording to Biography.com, Leonardo da Vinci was born in 1452 in the small town of Vinci. From a young age, he developed a passion for nature drawing. His portraits were mostly religious and nature paintings in a rather realistic manner. Leonardo da Vinci took three years to paint the portrait of Mona Lisa. He took great pride in this particular work, so much so that he always carried it with him until the time of his passing. After his death, the Portrait was acquired by the King of France and is today housed in the Louvre Museum in Paris, France. The portrait of Mona Lisa has been considered a renowned artistic masterpiece due to its unique drawing style which represents Leonardo's artistic gifts which allowed him to translate his views on nature into subtle paintings of delicacy and very magnificent finesse. The true identity of the woman in the Mona Lisa portrait remains a matter of intellectual discourse due to a myriad of theories attempting to identify her. According to cracked.com, among the theories identified to identify the Mona Lisa are: that the woman was his supposed girlfriend, Isabella of Aragon; that she was his mother, Caterina; others claim it was a female portrait by Leonardo da Vinci. However, the most acclaimed theory to explain the identity of Mona Lisa was that she was the wife of a wealthy businessman from Florence, known as Lisa Gherardini. The portrait of Mona Lisa is famous because of the mystique and mystery of the woman's facial expression. The woman expresses an enigmatic smile subject to varied interpretations.
