  • Essay / advantages of topologies - 622

Network topologies also have certain advantages and disadvantages. This essay discusses the main advantages and disadvantages of three of these major topology technologies, namely ring, bus and star, showing the associated cabling types for each of these topologies. In the ring topology, each node is connected. to two other nodes, therefore, “data sent between nodes will typically require paths of at least two links” (Mansfield, KC and Antaonakos, JL, 2010, p. 27). The advantages of the ring topology include its organization, reduced collisions and one-way traffic at very high speeds. Another advantage is that for connectivity between workstations, there is no need for a network server to control this connectivity and each computer system has the same access to all network resources. One of the disadvantages of the ring topology is that when a link fails, "the increased time required to relay messages around the bad link may be intolerable for some applications" (Mansfield, KC and Antaonakos, JL, 2010, p. 27). Other notable D...
