  • Essay / Oedipus the King is a Greek Disaster - 954

Sophocles' Oedipus the King is one of the oldest Greek tragedies known to the common world. The play has all the factors required for a classic Greek tragedy. To explain further, I agree that Sophocles' "Oedipus the King" is a Greek disaster. This remarkable and hard to believe play turned out to be a Greek tragedy by Aristotle. In Aristotle's thinking, a classical drama should tell the story of a fall, have unexpected twists and turns, provoke pity and fear in the audience, and have a disastrous ending. There are many examples of these fundamentals throughout the play to prove that this is in fact a tragedy. With every Greek disaster, there is a main character, also known as a "tragic hero" who possesses tragic flaws, which lead to their downfall. . Oedipus exhibits three tragic flaws, intolerance, stubbornness, and short-temperedness, each of which leads to his downfall. An example of Oedipus' stubbornness could be when he demands to find Laius's murderer and prove that the prophecy did not come true. However, Jocasta's queen and mother Oedipus is already aware that all this chaos is true and chooses to hide the truth. "This man, why ask? Old shepherds, talk, empty nonsense, don't even think about it; don't even think about it." Oedipus responds: "Why, give up now, with a clue like this? Can't solve the "mystery of my birth?" Not for everyone! Oedipus shows his impatience when he insists on knowing the truth about his birth. In fact, how could anyone blame him: “This man, why ask?” Old shepherd, talk, empty nonsense, don't think about it anymore, don't even think about it” Oedipus replied: “What, give up now, with a clue like this? Failing to solve the mystery of my birth? Not for everyone!" His temper shows when he is incredibly angry at Tiresias for accusing him of being Laius's murderer. "No, I can't say I understood what you wanted say. Do it again" Tiresias responds by saying: "I say you are the murderer you are hunting". Oedipus once again demonstrates his temper and threatens Tiresias. "This obscenity, twice - by God you will pay. » Another important element in a Greek tragedy is an unexpected twist or event for the main character. An example of an unexpected twist is when a messenger from Corinth comes to Oedipus and informs him that Polybius, who Oedipus believes is. his father is dead and the people of Corinth hope that he will be their king.
