Yamauchi, the founder's grandson, retired this year. The Gamecube did not sell very well and Nintendo suffered its first operating losses in over 100 years. Meanwhile, Microsoft and Sony launched their own home consoles and began to take over the market. One of the main differences between Nintendo and its competitors was that Microsoft and Sony aimed to support the entire entertainment needs of the home, not just games. Nintendo's decision not to enter this type of market deserves an article in its own right. This move cost Nintendo market share, but because Nintendo owned the software, they remain a major player in the industry even though they only have a small percentage of the market. Nintendo DS and Wii, the release of these consoles was a major gamble for Nintendo after the Gamecube did not work(3). The DS and Wii were successful in the console market and helped Nintendo regain lost market share. Both consoles were revolutionary, with the DS having two screens including a touch screen. The Wii was another shift with a controller and games focused on social interactions, as well as health and fitness.
