Much Ado About Nothing is a play filled with deception, love and above all, lies. Throughout the play, Shakespeare creates scenes where misunderstandings and lies help to develop and destroy relationships and characters. Couples are influenced by others' efforts to find their love for each other or doubt their love for each other. There are many examples of deception. Pranks played on people often have the best intentions, to make them fall deeply in love or to make someone realize the big mistake they've made. Not all deception has good intentions. Although there are many characters in the play, I chose to make my essay about how all lies affect relationships between people; Benedick and Beatrice as well as Claudio and Hero. I chose these people because lies and deception are a very big part of their relationships and daily lives. As Don Pedro and his brother Don John, Claudio and Benedick return from a victorious war, preparations have been made for their return. Beatrice and Hero plan to greet them and welcome them peacefully into their space and home. When they arrive, they greet each other after a long time without seeing each other, apart from the arguments and the aggressiveness between Benedick and Béatrice who always has to argue. This is seen by everyone else present who wonders if they really hate each other or maybe they are just hiding their feelings and deceiving themselves and each other. At the ball, Benedick and Béatrice dance together without knowing who they are paired with. Suddenly, Beatrice starts talking to her partner as they continue to dance. She adds “well, he’s the prince’s jester, a very boring executioner. His only gift is to conceive possible slanders.” obviously, by saying this she is implying that Benedick is just a loser and his only job is to entertain the prince. The lie may seem to just push them further away from each other, but in reality it only brings them closer together. Later in scene 3, Don Pedro, Claudio and Leonato plan to play a trick on Benedick by making him believe that Beatrice had told her cousin Hero that she loved Benedick. It turns out to be a lie that will have a pretty big effect on what he thinks of her, changing the course of their relationship. Benedick hears what has happened and he slips awkwardly into the role of lover when Beatrice comes to call him for dinner and thanks her with a steady verse: “Lovely Beatrice, I thank you for your troubles. » This moves their relationship forward. In Act 3, the same thing happens to Beatrice. Hero and Ursula wait until Beatrice passes and is within earshot and say that Benedick told Don Pedro that he loved Beatrice. She is shocked by this news because Benedick had hidden feelings for her. Now they both think they love each other. They rejoice in this knowledge. Through deception and lying, their feelings towards each other have very much changed. Don John's deception had a bad meaning. He decides to ruin any good relationship first. He asks his friend Borachio to go out with Margaret, a maid. At night, Don John leads Don Pedro and Claudio.
