One of the most unsavory wars in history was the French and Indian War which took place from 1754 to 1763. This war was between France and Great Britain. This resulted in British victory and ended with the Treaty of Paris in 1763. According to A history of the American People, the British conquered almost all French possessions east of the Mississippi, also gaining Florida from the Spanish. The result of this war forced the British to begin taxing the colonists to pay for the war. This began the prelude to the American Revolution, from 1763 to 1775. The prelude to this revolution included many policies and restrictions that made America desire freedom from Great Britain. Some of these policies and restrictions were the Sugar Act, the Stamp Act, the Declaratory Act, the Townshend Revenue Act, the Tea Act, Coercive or Intolerable Acts and others. In the aftermath of the French and Indian War, the British decided to keep 10,000 regular troops stationed. in North America. This led to a greater debt for the British in maintaining this force during fighting. In 1764, Prime Minister George Grenville decided to obtain the necessary revenue from American colonists. This caused Parliament to pass a measure known as the Sugar Act, which imposed a customs duty on sugar imported into the colon (132). Most colonists were angry that the British government? acted without authorization. They didn't like being controlled by the British. This led lawyer James Otis to declare that "taxation without representation is tyranny" (132), meaning that the colonists were not represented in Parliament and they believed it was unfair.
