Essay / Top Three American Values: A Survey - 548
The top three values identified by the participants I interviewed tended to vary. The age of the participant may have been an influential factor in determining the top three American traits that participants perceived as important. The first participant indicated that his main value was freedom. This corresponded to my upper value. The second participant indicated that her main value was family. This can be attributed to her age and the likelihood of her having a family. The third participant identified his main value as peace. He was the oldest participant in the study (41 years old). His previous life experience may therefore have influenced his choice. Although my highest personal value was different from that of two of the three participants I interviewed, I can understand how these participants might have chosen these values. However, I still maintain that freedom should be the number one value reported by Americans because it helps characterize the country's values. The next value I chose was Intellect. I believe that intellect is an essential attribute to becoming a successful person. Additionally, intellect helps individuals adhere to different situations. From this perspective, individuals with stronger intellect can often find commonalities with other individuals in different situations. The second participant I interviewed thought achievement was the next important variable. On some level, his thinking perhaps resonates with mine. Yet, I continue to maintain that intellect is an essential element in achieving achievement. Early participants believed that ambition was the second most important American value. I can understand his point of view because it takes ambition to succeed. I further believe that his response may be influenced by his age. At the age of 18, many people feel ambitious about their future. The third participant indicated that his second most important value was family. Although his perspective is different from mine, some of that could be attributed to the different stages of life. The third important American value I identified was responsibility. As an individual, I believe it is crucial that people take responsibility for their actions and their future. However, the participants I interviewed provided a range of different answers that conflicted with mine. The first participant indicated that his third most important value was achievement. I can understand why he chose this value, as many people in similar age groups value their future achievements. Despite his choice, I disagree with his answer, because I think there are more important values that could have been chosen..
